Faulty gas heaters can cause death

Robinson’s tragic carbon monoxide poisoning case

Five years ago, Victoria was horrified of the death of brothers Chase (8) and Tyler (6), due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Who wouldn’t be?

Both children were sleeping with their mother in bed when they inhaled deadly fumes from a leaking gas heater in their Victorian home in 2010. Watch this news describing the incident.

Carbon monoxide poisoning cases doubled last year

Last year, Health Minister Jack Snelling showed concern over the doubling of carbon monoxide poisoning cases in 2015.

“Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect because it has no smell, taste or colour, meaning you can inhale it without realising,” Jack said.

“Those most vulnerable to carbon monoxide poisoning are babies and young children, pregnant women, the elderly and immobile and those with respiratory problems,” he added.

Given these facts, it is of utmost important for everyone to diligently have their gas appliances tested. If you have an old gas heater or other old gas appliances, you should get them tested. It would be better to be safe than sorry.

When should you have your gas heaters tested?

Gas heaters to be tested every two years

Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) demands gas heaters to be tested every two years. However, you may need more frequent carbon monoxide testing if your gas heaters are:

  • Irregularly serviced
  • Requiring part replacements
  • Older style units

Signs of faulty gas heaters

Be proactive. Talk to us if you notice any of your gas appliance exhibiting any of these signs:

  • Discolouration or soot around the unit
  • Appearance of yellow flames from the burner (excluding decorative effects)
  • Sudden heater shutdown
  • Signs of debris in the vent/flue pipe
  • Missing or damaged cowl on the top of the vent/flue pipe

If your gas heater or appliances show any of these signs then don’t put yourself or others at risk. Have it checked today. Call us now at  0417307226 to schedule your carbon monoxide testing and inspection.
